I find myself among a pile of snot-sodden tissue paper at the end of January, body ridden with white blood cells, lips chapped by dehydration but mind buzzing with the electricity of January. January was a myriad of things -- love, friends and courage -- but above all, January was a promise I made myself, and a month I decided to create for myself.
January, oh January, you've been lovely.
#1 | DOWNFALL OF THE MONTH: FALLING SICK
January was a nest infested with flu bugs. Friends were sniffling weakly into tissue papers frequently and loved ones were groaning under wraps of thick blankets. I was able to run from it for a while, giggling wickedly at their frailty, but I was instantly apologetic when the bug finally caught up with me towards the end of the month.
I don't get sick very often, but when I do, I go down hard. The signs of recovery are evident presently and I am only glad. Insomniac nights coupled with treacherous migraines have been distress enough; I can't wait to get back on my feet.
#2 | CELEBRATION OF THE MONTH: THE LUNAR NEW YEAR
The new moon at the end of the month saw local Chinese neighbourhoods decked out in red and bathing in lanterns. This year, the Lunar New Year fell on the 28th of January and, as with all traditions, was celebrated gaily.
This year's Reunion Dinner was a small gathering of remaining relatives in the country over a home-cooked spread of sacred family recipes, some good ol' drinks and the usual talk of marriage, life and, of course, the latest addition to the roster of favourite familial disses: the Trump Administration.
One of the most exciting projects I got to be a part of is for Brunei-based brand Naforrer's upcoming collection, NFormation. The concept is simple: a collaboration between local influencers and designer Farhanna Pura of which the end result would be customized pieces for every lady that oozes strength, sophistication and style.
January marked the month where we got to shoot for the campaign in a hotel suite, and it was nothing short of fun and empowering. On board the glam process were Malaysian makeup artist Natasya and production house Moderate Films. The campaign will be released soon, and I am more than excited!
#4 | BITTERSWEET MOMENT OF THE MONTH: GOODBYE, DISCOFISSH
The month did not bring about a lot of posts for The Mayden, save for one post where I muse about a trip down to the water village alongside a friend, Shi Min of discofissh, who, by now, must be a regular of the blog. The melancholy days I have expected leading up to her departure to The Land Down Under this weekend have been lamented enough in the blog post, and it will become perhaps one of the most bittersweet posts here on The Mayden.
#5 | ACHIEVEMENT OF THE MONTH: OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE
As with thousands of people, I started the year off by creating a list of goals. Though not shared online, it is one I have been constantly keeping in mind. One of the items on the list: to do at least one thing outside of my comfort zone a month.
The start of January saw me enrolling myself for a dance class. The mid of January saw me voluntarily auditioning as an actress for a theater production. The end of January saw me assuming the role of director(-elect) for yet another production. Palpitations, faint heart attacks and fear coursed through my veins for all of these little milestones, and to say that I was confident in everything that I did would be a blatant lie, so I shall say this instead: I had no regrets.
How was your January?
