This is part one of a two-parter collaboration with Revolution.
When asked whether I am a daring person when it comes to styling preferences, I will retreat back into a cozy shell of blacks and more blacks, shake my head and proclaim my comfort zone. There has been several occasions, however, where I have taken more daring styling approaches, but never one where I was challenged to style a pair of sneakers.
Initially panicky, slightly fidgety, I thought that this could only be achieved by straying far from my shell, but I surprise myself by staying within it while reeling in something rather far-fetched.
When approached by Revolution and asked how I would style a pair of sneakers, there was a moment of retraction as my mind averted its eye to memories of having seen chic street style bloggers donning effortless denim, crisp white button downs and a pair of sneakers -- something my brain has somehow registered as the "right" way to style sneakers -- and I contemplated mimicking in lieu of misfitting. I resurfaced, however, once logic knocked me hard in the head and I responded with the next thing that came to mind: grunge.
Putting sneakers in context of classic grunge, where boots, platforms and creepers are essentially sacred, may sound like a ludicrous idea, but like all sartorial escapades, picking the right pieces is key.
I was hit with an array of colours as I stepped into Revolution's store where bright reds and neon greens pulsated with life. I opted for a black pair of Nike Air Force 1 07s*. Its sleek, almost minimal look was the point of persuasion for me as I rest assuredly that black was something I could style à la The Mayden.
Key pieces like the plaid flannel, rounded sunglasses and fishnet stockings stenciled out the entire look. It was simply a matter of throwing together comfort pieces between the gaps that will complete the grunge take on styling sneakers. I stuck to fail-proof all-time favourites: a black tee, a choker against stacked necklaces and a pair of high-waisted shorts.
With this sartorial excapade, I think I may have forged a little space in my shell for sneakers and risks -- even if I do take rein and swerve the risk in the direction that works within the comfort of my wardrobe.
While this is an all-out grunge take, the next part of this collaboration will feature a slightly more chic look; stay tuned for part two!
