The Third Piece

A treat is in three, like ice cold tea or a dip in the sea or a shopping spree. The trinity, the triad, the trio -- three; they roll off the tongue like sugared up plums, so sweet, so full, so right -- I mean ripe. List of threes: three in words, three before inertia, three in tune. A waltz, a spring, a little life that dances on tiptoes, that is three.

If there is a fashion 'rule' I follow religiously, the third piece rule would be it. Seen most pronounced in my lazy day outfits -- black and white and a little bit of colour -- the basic three piece look is hard to miswear, if ever there is such a thing as miswearing clothes.

On days where I feel sluggish, I reach for a pair of shorts and a fitted top. My mistake for not taking close up shots, but the top has crochet details, delicate and feminine. As pretty as the outfit may be as it is, I like to add in a third article of clothing -- this comes most frequently in the form of a beaniea statement necklace or a blazer -- to pull the look together.

The third piece is balance, the arms spread wide on a tightrope 10 feet high.

An oversized khaki buttondown, a piece thrown out by my father, is the piece I chose to counteract the monochrome that spines this look. There is nothing delicate in a shapeless silhouette and, when juxtaposed, creates balance in an otherwise girly outfit.
